Branding
At Captus, branding is more than just a visual of the corporate name. It is a focus and understanding that spans across all aspects of the business, the culture, the customers or audience, and the goals of the organization. Captus begins the process with a comprehensive competitive analysis and an internal audit to gain a full understanding of the message that the organization wants to convey. From there, Captus develops attractive and effective branding, including conformance and usage standards, that enable an organization to present a unified image and message across all media whether it be on letterhead, brochure, Web site, report, newsletter, presentation or tradeshow graphics.

Best Practices Kit
In 2008, the Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease needed to provide information about successful health-promotion programs across the country. The idea was that organizations could use these examples to start their own programs and thereby reduce the incidence of chronic disease.
Captus designed a catalogue of programs, and with it, a map that showed the steps that need to be taken to institute a successful program, as well as an Essential Elements guide that detailed the commonalities among successful programs. Captus also added an executive summary booklet to the package. In the end, what started as a catalogue grew into Keeping America Healthy: A Guide to Successful Programs for the Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease, a toolkit that is being used by countless organizations across the country, from schools to employers to community groups.
Chosen from more than 4,000 entries from around the world, the toolkit won the Silver Davey Award from the International Academy of the Visual Arts. The Captus creative team was responsible for the graphic design, print production, project management, and editing of the toolkit.
Training Curriculum Presentation and Manuals
Beginning in October 2008, the Early Education and Child Care Initiative of the American Academy of Pediatrics turned to Captus to develop a training curriculum on medical administration in child care and early education settings. The curriculum was developed with input from over 20 health care, early education and child care professionals and organizations. Captus managed the collaborative process and designed a training presentation consisting of five modules, an instructor's manual with training notes and supporting materials, and a participant's manual. The curriculum was presented at the American Academy of Pediatrics National Conference & Exhibition in 2009.
Association Newsletter Design and Production
The Renal Physicians Association asked Captus to redesign RPA News – the organization's bimonthly newsletter that provides information on issues affecting renal physicians, practices and RPA activities. Captus used this opportunity to give the newsletter a current, updated look that represents the cutting-edge information this newsletter provides to RPA members. Captus continues to produce this newsletter, including editing, layout, and print management.
Chronic Disease Information Kit and Exhibits
Since its inception in April 2005, the Partnership for Prescription Assistance (PPA) has connected more than 5.5 million people to programs that can provide medicines at little or no cost. Sponsored by America's biopharmaceutical companies, PPA is the world's largest private-sector effort with this purpose. It offers a single point of access to more than 475 public and private patient assistance programs, including more than 180 programs offered by pharmaceutical companies.
PPA delivers its message through a variety of means, including two buses that travel across the country and sign people up for programs. PPA wanted to expand its arsenal of information, so that people with common conditions who visited the bus could also learn more about their conditions, and learn it from reliable sources.
PPA tasked Captus with developing a box of information cards that was portable enough to travel on the buses, but still conveyed enough information that patients could learn what they needed to know and where they could get more information. Captus researched and wrote the cards, and designed the box and inserts.
Even before the boxes were complete, the client wanted to use the images for events that were being held at political conventions in 2008. Captus designed and managed the printing of several larger-than-life exhibit booth displays based on the design of the cards.
From White Paper to User-Friendly Brochure
The Pharmaceutical Industry Labor-Management Association (PILMA) is an organization of employees from all levels of the biopharmaceutical industry, from management to laborers. PILMA members are working together to address issues of mutual interest and concern to the industry, its workers and all Americans.
In 2009, PILMA's board of trustees finalized a white paper called Health Care Reform for Workers and Working Families that outlined the organization's platform on reform and suggested solutions to existing and potential problems. The 10-page report was entirely text – it had no tables, photographs or graphics – and it was written in the language of executives and management.
PILMA contracted with Captus to make the document friendly to laborers, both in language and in presentation.
A Captus writer and editor worked with the PILMA team to revise the document and wrote a one-page summary that boiled down the full paper into digestible key points. The Captus design team then turned the edited manuscript and summary into a glossy, colorful, easy-to-navigate publication.
Issue Briefs for National Membership Organization
Captus developed branding, a template and layout for a series of issue briefs for the Partnership for Prevention's National Commission on Prevention Priorities (NCPP). NCPP is a membership organization of businesses, nonprofit organizations and government agencies advancing policies and practices to prevent disease and improve the health of all Americans.
This series of issue briefs describes the findings of a detailed study by NCPP of the evidence on health impact and cost effectiveness of 25 clinical preventive services including 21 services recommended by the US Preventive Services Task Force. The first of these issue briefs were distributed at the July 2009 NCPP meeting.
Web Site Development
Captus facilitates a thorough planning process with our clients to pinpoint the exact services required, whether it's updating an existing site or creating a new one integrating the latest Web technologies. We transform existing Web sites by eliminating the clutter, revising the architecture and navigation to make it easy for people to find what they're looking for on your site and to take the actions you desire. We enhance the content as needed, bringing a marketing communications orientation to each site we work on.
Child Health Informatics Center
The American Academy of Pediatrics engaged Captus Communications to revise the site architecture and improve the functionality of an existing site that had outgrown its original configuration. Captus created a solution to reorganize the "Resource Library" making frequently requested materials readily available from every page of the site. Working closely with our AAP liaison to reorganize site content and extend the branding and color palette throughout the site, our developer essentially rebuilt and updated the coding from top to bottom. By providing clean, updated style sheets and coding, AAP CHIC staff can now easily maintain and update the site as new resources become available.
Julius B. Richmond Center of Excellence
Captus began this 6 month project by facilitating the planning to revise this site's structure and organization. The end result is a completely redesigned 80+ page site showcasing resources to protect children from tobacco and secondhand smoke. To facilitate the handoff to our client who maintains the site, our Web developer created a series of video tutorials for AAP's internal use. This site had a few challenges — taking a complex PDF and creating an HTML version of it within the site (view site) and building a policy tool as a micro-site to present a great deal of complex content in an organized manner (view site).
Children's Oral Health
Working closely with our client liaison, Captus revised the navigation and assisted in the revision of the content of this site to provide easy access to the most frequently requested resources which had previously been difficult to locate. We provided a complete graphic redesign and introduced features to control lengthy copy and numerous links and attachments. Our developer prepared a video tutorial to enable our client liaison to build out new sections of the site independently as content became available.
Section on Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics, AAP
Captus was charged with developing a fresh, contemporary site using the existing logo and color palette that had served the Section well for many years. Further, the site had hundreds of pages of content with a dysfunctional site architecture that made it difficult to map the organization of the content for review and migration. Captus was successful in creating a complete redesign of the site's look and feel while maintaining the brand identity of the Section and at the same time, recommending a streamlined architecture that was responsive to the member requests for quick access to key resources. To maximize the budget, we developed a collaborative approach whereby Captus consulted with AAP staff members who analyzed the content and determined what to migrate or delete. We are proud that this site was awarded a Bronze Web Health Award, 2011.
Chesterfield County Fire & EMS
Captus conceptualized and developed a comprehensive recruitment campaign to increase public awareness about volunteer opportunities and the benefits of volunteering to the individual and the community. Based on this, we developed branding and copy for three recruitment themed Web pages to integrate into the county's site. Captus was required to work within the parameters of the county's site, which was a tightly controlled CMS environment. While challenging to work new copy, graphics and branding into the site, we successfully collaborated with the county's IT department to execute the three pages seamlessly. We also developed a mobile Web page to be accessed by Smartphones via QR (quick response) codes on the print materials.
Dating Abuse Stops Here
Siobhan Russell was a beautiful, vibrant 19-year-old when she was murdered by her ex-boyfriend in April 2009. Her devastated parents, Lynne and Andy, needed to do something to keep Shev's spirit alive. After reaching out to parents of other teen victims of dating abuse, Lynne, a graphic designer at Captus, found herself inspired to create DASH as a resource for her community. Captus's Creative Director, Bob Walter designed and developed the site targeting teens and their families; Captus provided our services pro bono. The DASH Web site won two awards in 2011 — a Bronze Web Health Award and a Silver Award of Distinction from International Academy of the Visual Arts.
Helping Babies Breathe
The objective was to build a site that would appeal to an international audience and in particular, to provide valuable resources that would save infants lives in third world countries. We had to build the site without any content using an initial architecture provided to us. However, it became clear that the Committee working on the site had limited experience with Web site development and how to organize content online in such a way that there was a logical flow and connection between the main landing pages and sub-pages and linkages across sections. Captus met this challenge by working in a consultative role with our client liaison to make recommendations about organizing the content as it became available, in a logical and easily accessible format without changing previously approved navigation. Based on feedback Captus has received to date, all project participants and international partners have been extremely pleased with the resulting site.
Keeping Kidney Patients Safe
Captus designed and developed this site which has received widespread recognition in the nephrology community and set our client, the Renal Physicians Association apart as a leader in the field of nephrology patient safety. As a result of successfully collecting best practice examples through the Web site, RPA was able to establish a Patient Safety Awards Program. Captus writers created the original site content which included a patient safety campaign of posters and handouts, and an online educational module template which the client has successfully expanded upon post-launch.
The Business Bank
Captus worked closely with the Bank's marketing committee to redesign the Web site using the existing framework created by an IT firm that handles the back-end banking functionality and maintains the site. Our objectives were to provide a graphic redesign to convey a professional, user-friendly image of The Business Bank to appeal to the Bank's primary target audiences, improve user navigation and access to frequently visited functions/pages, integrate video, and strengthen the overall branding and appeal of the site to the Bank's demographically varied customer base. We revised all of the content and created an online ad campaign and integrated it throughout the site.
Federation of Pediatric Organizations
This client required development of a new site within a rapid turnaround and a tight budget. Since the content was not developed at the time site construction began, we worked collaboratively as content was created and provided to us to adjust the architecture to accommodate growth over time. Also, the architecture and design had to be simple, professional and easily updated. Based on client feedback to date, we are confident we exceeded expectations for this assignment and we continue to provide support for annual updates and hosting.
Healthy Foster Care America
Captus was tasked with a complete redesign of an existing site including development of site architecture, navigation, content development (writing/editing), design including logo/branding, incorporation of children's art as a theme, all site development, testing and launch services. Because this site serves a diverse audience all aspects of the site were developed in collaboration with a Steering Committee with multiple levels of approval. Captus also designed a set of companion materials and forms incorporating new branding. By providing a template for the companion materials, our client is able to add to the suite of materials over time with in-house staff.
Healthy Child Care America
Captus received a Bronze Summit Creative Award in 2010 for our work on the Healthy Child Care America Web site, a program of the Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). The Summit Creative Awards recognizes and celebrates the creative accomplishments of small and medium sized advertising agencies and other creative groups. Captus redesigned an existing site with new navigation, incorporation of existing branding but with a new look and feel. The Web site incorporates two health curriculums developed by Captus Communications under separate contracts. These curriculums address health concerns in child care settings.
Bright Futures
Since 2006 Captus has provided support to the American Academy of Pediatrics in the implementation of the Bright Futures Guidelines for promotion of child health. In addition to strategic planning and program development for this initiative, Captus Web site services have included site redesign, revision of site architecture, development of new content, ongoing site maintenance, development of marketing/promotions within the site to support implementation of the Bright Futures Guidelines and use of materials. Captus provides ongoing site development and consultation as well as all coding, testing, coordination with AAP IT. We are currently in the process of a major update and redesign of the site to incorporate social media and current web technologies.
Writing and Editing
There is no more powerful mechanism of communication than words themselves. The words you choose and how you present them can mean the difference between success and failure. Our team takes great care to pinpoint the message, write it in a clear and interesting way, and then double- and triple-check the final materials to ensure against inconsistencies and typos.
Captus offers a full range of editorial services, from developing original copy to proofreading to editing our clients' existing materials and repurposing them for a variety of uses. Our writers and editors have extensive experience developing copy for the Web, broadcast, and print.
PhRMA Annual Industry Profiles
Since 2003, the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) has looked to Captus for its signature publication: the annual industry profile.
After meeting with the PhRMA team, a Captus writer draws up an outline that, after months of research, writing and editing, ultimately becomes the profile's text. The book covers such topics as annual worldwide sales, research and development costs, issues facing the biopharmaceutical industry, health concerns, and corporate giving.
The design department is tasked with coming up with a unique look for the book every year – a look that will carry across multiple projects and formats, including a PowerPoint presentation and a laminated card of key facts. The industry profile is one of the most-used publications at PhRMA, serving as the go-to for the latest industry information.
Biotechnology Institute Position Papers
The Biotechnology Institute asked Captus to write the first in a series of position papers on the critical need for reform of science education in the United States. The Biotechnology Institute, in conjunction with national scientific and educational organizations, including the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, is dedicated to educating teachers, students and the public about the promise and challenges of biotechnology.
AAP Health Literacy
The American Academy of Pediatrics asked Captus to help them develop a manual to assist pediatricians when talking to patients with limited health literacy, meaning those who just don't understand health issues, as well as those for whom English isn't a native language. Captus worked with dozens of specialists to research and develop the copy, and provided AAP with a complete manuscript.
Plain Language Pediatrics includes tips on talking with patients and, more importantly for pediatricians, their patients' parents, in terms they could understand, despite any limits to their literacy. The book, broken out by health condition, includes lists of common health-related words and the plain-language counterparts that pediatricians can substitute. Captus also developed patient stories that demonstrate common pitfalls and ways to improve communication and, therefore, improve patients compliance with treatment. The book also notes special cultural exceptions and explains how various cultures view certain conditions. The final product also includes plain-language handouts in both English and Spanish that pediatricians were encouraged to distribute to their patients.
PhRMA Toolkit
Facing image assaults on many fronts, the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) wanted to arm its representatives across the country with answers to many of the questions that are asked of them in the field. After listing the issues and providing some basic information, PhRMA engaged Captus to create a toolkit to educate the field representatives about issues surrounding the pharmaceutical industry.
The issues fell into three categories: Prevention, Access and Innovation. The fact sheets covered a broad array of issues, including direct-to-consumer advertising, medical liability, disparity of care, using medicines safely, and personalized medicine. Captus researched and wrote a two-page fact sheet on each issue, and then compiled the sheets into a three-panel folder designed by the Captus art department. PhRMA was so pleased with the toolkit that they hired Captus again to reengineer the issue sheets into a notebook for another PhRMA program designed to educate industry employees.
AAP Bright Futures
When AAP undertook the revision and update of the Bright Futures Guidelines for Health Supervision of Infants, Children and Adolescents, 3rd Edition, they turned to Captus for health writing, reference research, and editorial assistance to produce the 600+ page publication, which is considered the gold standard of pediatric preventive care.
This award-winning book, which was years in the making, provides a wealth of information, which Captus writers then adapted and repurposed into:
- A handy pocket guide for use by pediatric residents and health providers
- Handouts on health promotion themes
- Fact sheets
- Newsletter content for the multidisciplinary audiences served by the Bright Futures initiative
Captus also led the redesign of the Bright Futures Web site, including writing content, developing monthly health promotion messages, and writing and producing videos to promote awareness of the initiative and the third edition of the guidelines. Captus provides ongoing support in program development, writing, editing, Web site maintenance, strategic and planning services for this important child health promotion initiative.
